Launch of People Before Profit Alliance ‘No to the EU Austerity Treaty’ Campaign

4 05 2012

The People Before Profit Alliance today launched its campaign against the Fiscal Treaty and outlined its plan to challenge the arguments being put forward by the Government and others on the Yes side. Speaking at the launch were Richard Boyd Barrett TD, Joan Collins TD, Cllr Pat Dunne, Cllr Melisa Halpin and Ailbhe Smyth (Chair, People Before Profit Alliance). People Before Profit condemns the bullying tactics of the government and in particular Michael Noonan’s threats to impose further austerity in the event of a No vote and the alliance today called on the government to debate the real contents of the treaty rather than using scare tactics. The reality is that signing up to this Treaty would mean signing up to billions in further cuts. The central slogan of the campaign is Bailout People not Banks.
In his statement, Richard Boyd Barrett TD said,”The government is trying to frighten the people with talk of the dire consequences which will follow a No vote. The latest disgraceful example is Michael Noonan’s threat to impose further austerity” ‘This is a smokescreen to avoid discussing the actual content of the Treaty” ‘If passed, the Fiscal Treaty will lead to fines being imposed on Ireland, should it fail to meet artificial targets set by the EU. These fines could amount to €160 million and would cause further hardship. ‘The Treaty also gives the EU Commission greater powers to lay down guidelines on the type of ‘corrective action’ that Ireland would have to take. ‘The track record of the EU Commission and the ECB is already plain to see. ‘They have pressed Ireland to bail out banks in order to help shore up the European banking system. They have also insisted that we pay property charges and water charges’ ‘Why should we vote Yes to give more powers to an unelected agency that does not have our interests at heart?’

Joan Collins TD said,“Austerity is not working. €25 billion has been taken out of the Irish economy through cuts and tax increases. At the time of the Lisbon II vote in 2009 we were told vote ‘Yes’ for jobs – but there are now 120,000 fewer people in work. It’s no wonder the state will need another bailout in the coming years. Money is available for another bailout under the existing program – the statement of the European Council of January 30 makes that clear. We reject the blackmail threats of the government and its supporters.” “The Austerity Treaty would turn this recession into an economic depression. It would bring at least €5.7 billion additional cuts and taxes from 2015, on top of the €8.6 billion austerity up til then. And for what? To ensure that the banks and bondholders are paid in full. The household tax is part of this austerity program. It’s effectively a bank-bailout tax. I call on all who oppose continued cuts, and taxes such as the home and water taxes, to vote against the austerity treaty.” “A no vote in Ireland is a vote for hope, a vote for change.” “It is a vote to join the movement in opposition to austerity across Europe – in France, Spain and Greece. A no vote is the beginning of an alternative that puts people before the profits of banks and bondholders.”

Ailbhe Smith, Chairperson of People Before Profit, said today, “People in Ireland are already suffering enormous hardship due to austerity and cuts. Vulnerable communities have been disproportionately affected with women and children bearing the brunt of the cuts. Poverty, in particular child poverty, is growing and it is vitally important to Vote No to this austerity treaty “.

Cllr. Melisa Halpin, Dun Laoghaire: “For many the idea of balancing a budget seems sensible but the point is that countries are not like individuals. The way to exit out of an economic crisis is to invest in jobs which in turn will create more jobs, create more revenue. When we call for a No we call for state investment in schools, hospitals, housing and jobs to get us out of this crisis.”

The Government is running Scared. Don’t Register Don’t Pay

29 03 2012

Press statement 29 March 2012
Campaign Against Household & Water Taxes (CAHWT)
9 TDs Demand Accurate Reporting of Registration Figures
The 9 TDs supporting the Boycott of the Household Tax today demand that the Agency responsible for collecting the Household Tax and Media report strictly accurate figures relating to the total numbers of households and this should include an account of those:
a) required to register b) numbers registered and c) numbers paid.

In recent days there is widespread manipulation of figures to make the Government position look a little less dreadful.

The baseline figure for registration is 1.8 million NOT the 1.6 million which is being used in the last few days. Therefore as of last night the numbers recorded (482,000) as having registered is 27 % of the 1.8 million. This leaves more than 1.3 million who have not registered or 73%.
Keep Up The Boycott:

We urge the ordinary people all over the country to keep up the huge Boycott of the Household Tax which is their rejection, not just of a new tier of taxation which will quickly go to €1,000 but of the disastrous policy of Austerity which is wrecking our society.

Support for Protest March to Fine Gael Ard Fheis this Saturday Starting at the Garden of Remembrance at 1.00PM

We fully support the demonstration on Saturday and believe that a major, well disciplined and peaceful demonstration of people power will be further evidence of the strength of the Campaign. We call on all those who support the Campaign to attend with their families for a genuine show of the real feelings of the majority of ordinary people in this country.

We now demand that the Government withdraw the Household Tax forthwith and cease bullying the decent majority of our people who have financed this State for decades while rich elites cheated.

Signed

Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan TD, Mick Wallace TD, John Halligan TD, Thomas Pringle, Richard Boyd Barrett TD, Seamus Healy TD, Joan Collins TD, Clare Daly TD, Joe Higgins TD.

PBPA/ULA Councillor Brid Smith Condemns Legalised Extortion by Waste Company.

17 01 2012

Councillor Brid Smith, People Before Profit, has condemned ‘the legalised extortion’ of a €100 standing charge being imposed by Greyhound for waste collection in the Dublin City Council area.

‘The Greyhound company have no right to demand €100 up front from people. They only want this money so that they can build up their financial reserves at our expense.

‘The manner in which DublinCity Council have withdrawn from waste collection represents a huge historical set back.

‘Waste collection has been seen as a public service since the Victorian era – -it should not be regarded as an opportunity to make profit.

There are three aspects of this arrangement which are deeply disturbing:

  1.  Information on the exact financial arrangement between Dublin City Council and Greyhound are being withheld from elected representatives. Under the guise of ‘commercial sensitivity’ an insidious form of censorship has been imposed. But the people ofDublinhave every right to scrutinise arrangements made with private companies. What right do unelected city managers have to do deals without public transparency’.
  2. Dublin City Council has given Greyhound the right to pursue people who owe the council money for waste charges. No information has been provided on how much money will go back to the council or what cut Greyhound will get. Instead a private company has been given the right to harass people who are already stressed out by huge bills.
  3. The workers of Dublin City Council – who have given loyal service over the years have been treated in a disgraceful manner. They have been given no guarantees about their earnings – but have been told to turn up each morning like ‘spailpin fanaigh’ to wait outside the city council for work. This is no way to treat workers in the 21st century.

I call on people to protest against this attack on public services and to take the example of the global Occupy movement and resist.

Demand the Full Reversal of cuts to DEIS Schools- Join the Protest on 19th Jan 3.30pm outside the Dept of Education

17 01 2012

People Before Profit Councillor Brid Smith is calling on the Minister of Education to guarantee the full reversal of cuts to DEIS Schools outline in this years Budget.

Minister Quinn last week order a review on the impact of  cuts to DEIS schools after reports from his own inspectorate and from the Education Research Centre detailed the real positive  impact DEIS is having on the attainment levels of pupils in these schools.

The cuts – which involve changes to the pupil-teacher ratio, the withdrawal of extra resources such as Support Teachers and changes to the way in which Learning Support and Language Support services are allocated – could result in all DEIS schools losing at least 1 – 2 frontline teachers, with some losing up to 8 teachers over the next three years.

Minister Quinn must now, having admitted his terrible mistake, ensure there is  a full and immediate reversal of all DEIS cuts. However, Minister Quinn has said that if he is to reverse anything he will have to make cuts elsewhere in education. This is not good enough and there are alternatives to cutting vital budgets in areas such as Education. A small increase in tax on the wealth in this country would cover the needs of the Education sector.

Councillor Brid Smith said “Parents, teachers and children have to keep up their campaign and keep the pressure on Minister Quinn and this FG/ Labour government because this backtracking in recent weeks regarding the cuts to disability and cuts on Education has shown people power can force the government’s hand. There should be no question of any other cuts in Education. We have to insist that this government puts our children and our future first and not the dictats of the Troika. Therefore I would urge all parents, teachers and  pupils to join this protest and show your support”.

Victory to the La Senza Workers

17 01 2012

The courageous act by La Senza workers to occupy their workplace must be applauded and supported.

The greed of capitalism for profit creates bubbles, and when those bubbles burst it is the workers who suffer. As retail is the bubble predicted to burst to 2012, staff in La Senza have set the trend for other retail workers to fight back and to win their rights.

La Senza workers were inspired by the sit-inCorkby Vita Cortex. These occupations are the beginning of what may be many worker occupations.

La Senza representative Tara Keane said “We took a moral stand not just for ourselves but for all frontline workers in the retail sector.” The success of these workers will be important for many other workers in retail and other sectors.

Workers united will never be defeated, and this inspiration from La Senza and Vita Cortex show the way for all workers in 2012.

Solidarity for La Senza Workers’ Occupation

11 01 2012

People Before Profits Councillor Brid Smith has voiced her strong support for the decision by the La Senza workers who are occupying the Liffey Valley outlet in protest over their deplorable treatment by La Senza and the administrators KPMG.

Workers at La Senza lingerie shop in Liffey Valley shopping Centre, who were told on Monday evening of the closure of all its operations in Ireland, have occupied this outlet, with La Senza workers from throughout Dublin joining them to assist the sit-in.

La Senza in Liffey Valley alone took in over a quarter of a million euro during the Christmas period, but staff have been left without wages, including overtime payments for working during this period. The People Before Profit Alliance applauds these workers in their stance and calls on the administrators of La Senza, KPMG, to immediately pay the workers all that is owed to them in full, as well full redundancy.

Responding to the occupation by workers of the La Senza lingerie outlet in Liffey Valley Shopping Centre, People Before Profit / United Left Alliance Councillor Brid Smith said: “I strongly support the decision by the staff to occupy the Liffey Valley retail outlet. The treatment of these workers by the company and administrators is inexcusable and shameful. Like Vita Cortex workers in Cork, here is another situation where workers rights are trampled on and they are treated with utter contempt. We need legislation enacted to protect and prioritise the rights of workers and send a clear signal to employers that such behaviour towards workers will not be tolerated.”

People Before Profit/ United Left Alliance TD Richard Boyd Barrett submitted a request to hold an urgent Topical issue debate on the plight of the La Senza workers to the Ceann Comhairle this morning. Given the absolutely disgraceful treatment of the La Senza workers and their desperate current plight, Minister Bruton should also rapidly bring forward legal protections for workers in this kind of situation – to ensure that the rights and entitlements of the workforce are prioritised in the case of sudden closure or liquidation.

City Hall Protest November 28th @6pm

28 11 2011

Some of the bin workers who have spent the best part of their working lives collecting our rubbish throughout the city.
Dublin City Management are pushing ahead with the privatisation of the service and these workers joined councillors and local people in a protest outside the City Council meeting at the beginning of November.

Cllr Brid Smith spoke at the protest and told the gathering “It was inevitable that the introduction of bin charges back in 2001 would lead to the privatisation of the service. Once an essential service is transformed into a commodity for profit making it is subject to fierce competition from the market and the public provider comes under tremendous pressure in maintaining the service. This is not rocket science. It is plainly obvious and those that really bear the brunt are the workers in the service and the average citizens who depend on the public service. But this issue also highlights how democracy has been stripped from local councillors. After three times voting not to privatise the service, the elected councillors are told by an unelected Manager, that their vote doesnt matter and that the privatisation of the service will happen. That is why I have a motion before the council calling on the Government to repeal Section 4 of the Waste Management Act brought in by Fianna Fail, that gives the manager executive powers and undermines local democracy.”

The protesters agreed to return to the city council meeting that will decide on the next budget and voice their objection there to a budget that does not contain a provision for the bin collection service.

Watch this space and join in the budget protests at City Hall 28 November at 6pm

LANDEN ROAD RESIDENTS GET NOISE BARRIERS AROUND IRISH RAIL WORKS

26 09 2011

It gives me great pleasure to tell the people of Lower Ballyfermot that we have secured agreement with Irish Rail to erect noise barriers around the work sheds in the Inchicore Works.

For years the local people have had to put up with noise from the Inchicore Works where maintenance is carried out on locomotives and often in the early hours of the night and morning. Nobody minds the sound of passing trains but it is the engines idling on the tracks that cause major interruption for local residents.

So as your local People Before Profit Councillor I am delighted to tell you that after two years of negotiations, monitoring of train movement by local residents, petitioning and lobbying of both Irish Rail and Dublin City Council we have agreement for the erection of an double sided 8 metre high noise barrier around the maintenance works.

We want to thank Irish Rail Management for this outcome and we owe our gratitude to Joe Dunne and Christy Saul of Landen Roadfor sticking with this issue over the years and becoming expert “Train Spotters”. They have been relentless and determined and have worked hard with me to achieve this outcome.

We look forward to the improvements that this noise reduction will bring to the whole area. It should be completed within the next 8 weeks.

Well done everyone and if you want to get involved with other campaigning work in Ballyfermot, if you need help with issues or information, please do contact me.

I will be opening a centre in the Ranch for People Before Profit in the next month and will send out details to each home.

All the best for now

Councillor Brid Smith

Sacked NBRU National Executive Trade Unionist To Protest Outside His NBRU Union office ON Wed 6th April 2011 From 12-2PM.

5 04 2011

Eugene McDonagh, an executive member of the NBRU (National Bus and Rail Union), who was dismissed by Dublin Bus 12 months ago will be staging a protest to mark the anniversary of his sacking. Eugene is presently awaiting a hearing at the Employment Appeals Tribunal (EAT). Eugene was dismissed over an unofficial strike in April 2009 which affected four city depots and involved over a thousand drivers. The dispute happened over the introduction of a new roster on Route 128.The new roster was not agreed by workers at the depot and the dispute escalated to other garages over the following days.

A 10 month investigation charged numerous drivers with instigating the dispute, something they all denied, but Eugene was the only driver to be dismissed. He stated “I believe I was targeted because I was a shop steward with a history of opposing cuts to services and drivers conditions. The company investigation refused to hear from witnesses that didn’t suit the company line, and a recent Lrc inquiry confirmed that disciplinary procedures where broken. Drivers had to endure 10 months of threats that they would be sued and sacked under the Industrial relations Act while the company never accepted that local management had any responsibility for instigating the dispute due to the manner in which they forced in the new roster. I believe I was made a scapegoat for widespread failings across the company.

Eugene is now unemployed and has five children to support. His work record was exemplary and he points out that the dispute ended when he and other union reps negotiated an agreement with local managers that gave a guarantee that no driver would face disciplinary sanctions if they returned to work.

Eugene and his supporters will be protesting outside his union office as they believe that their union has done little if anything to defend their own executive or other drivers who faced similar charges.

Please Support this protest tomorrow if you are available. Given the attempts by Dublin Bus to continue to slash the services, we need fighters like Eugene more than ever.

Dublin Bus Protest -Defend the local 76/78/79 Bus services

30 03 2011

Over the next few months Dublin Bus will push ahead with major cuts in the bus service across the city and these cuts will hit our area badly

76 BUS WILL NOT COME THROUGH BALLYFERMOT

but instead it will drive across the motor way from Blanchardstown. If we loose the 76 route to the area it will have major consequences for students in Ballyfermot College and for students travelling to Tallaght IT. Ballyfermot children travelling to the Gael Scoil in Clondalkin will be hurt. It will also severely hurt those who have to travel to Tallaght hospital for appointments and visits.

78A BUS IS TO BECOME A CROSS CITY ROUTE TO FINGLAS

The frequency of this bus will be cut and there is more likelihood for delays since the bus has to cross through the city.

79 BUS TO BECOME A CROSS CITY ROUTE TO COOLOCK

Again the frequency will also be very damaging for this area. The people of Ballyfermot met last year to organise a response to the proposed cuts by Dublin Bus. The community registered a strong submission to Dublin Bus outlining our concerns. We have never had a response to that submission. Instead the company are determined to proceed with their original cuts agenda, ignoring the residents and their representatives in Ballyfermot. We can expect more of this from Dublin Bus now that Fine Gael are in Government and are running the transport department. They have always advocated the privatisation of public transport and will be setting out to run down the public bus service in order to allow the private operators in, The private operators always cream off the most lucrative routes but are not interested in a decent public transport service to the poorer areas where people need the public transport even more. Enough is Enough! This government has a slash and burn approach to services so that it can continue to pour tax payers money into the banks. Why should ordinary people have to pay for the gambling and speculation of the bankers and developers? We call on Dublin Bus to re-consider their decision and we will hold protests outside their Head Office to highlight this injustice.

APRIL 1st Protest outside Dublin Bus HQ on O’Connell Street from 12 noon to 2pm People from Ballyfermot, Clondalkin, Dun Laoire, Finglas and Ballymun will join together to fight the cuts to our bus service.

Don’t let them cut public transport. Defend our bus service.

TAKE TO THE STREETS TO OPPOSE THIS GOVERNMENT

23 11 2010

PBP Candidate for Dublin South Central Cllr Joan Collins released the following statement calling for support in tomorrow’s protest outside the Dept of Finance @12.30 on Merrion Square.

It appears that the government is lumbering towards a collapse – whether before the new year or in mid to late January. They should go and go now.

They are squatters in Dail Eireann, they squandered the Celtic tiger, cut taxes for the rich and neglected the health service and education. They have lied and cheated their way to keep their grimy hands on the mercs and perks they cherish so much.

Working class people across the country are dying for the chance to throw them out. We’ve been waiting too long.. We need to tell them that they are a poison at the head of the country. Their plans to appease the IMF and the European Central bank will devastate the incomes of ordinary people across the country and will slash the social supports that are desperately needed when thousands are falling out of work.

We need to show our opposition to the cuts. The demonstration on this Saturday 27th November is an opportunity to show that we will not accept the agenda of slash, burn and privatise. A huge militant demonstration will go a long way to getting this rotten government out. It will also show the other political parties that we do not accept the agenda of the IMF.

People Before Profit is calling a protest outside the Department of Finance on Merrion Square on Wednesday 24th November at 12.30 – the day the government publishes their four year budgetary plan. We cannot let them bring in this savage budget without a fight. They must know that we will fight them at every turn.

PROTEST OUTSIDE HSE HQ on THURSDAY 22 JULY

28 07 2010

Cllr. Brid Smith presenting the signed petition at the HSE HQ

The campaign occupied the offices of the HSE Headquarters for about an hour last Thursday to protest the planned closure of the Laurel Unit – an 18 bed unit at Cherryorchard Hospital. Hundreds of locals signed the petition against the closure of teh laurel uniot and we handed in the petition to Paul Connors, Head of Communications at the HSE  Headquarters. He has promised to get back to the campaign as soon as possible, yet we are still waiting.

Hundreds turned out to protest the closure of wards at Cherry Orchard Hospital

8 07 2010

A little over 300 people took part in a lively and colourful demonstration in Ballyfermot , 1st July, to protest against ward closures in Cherry Orchard Hospital.

Families and carers were joined by community activists, local political representatives and the wider community in a show of solidarity with patients suffering from althzeimers and dementia. The Laurel Unit in Cherry Orchard hospital which provides 18 beds for such patients is due to be closed down.
People marched through Ballyfermot to the hospital where family members whose loved ones are affected by the proposed cuts handed in a local petition to hospital management.

Speaking at a rally afterwards Brid Smith, local councillor for People Before Profit ,said that “this is the closure of service in Cherry Orchard by stealth. If they do not lift the recruitment embargo in the HSE and start to fill the 22 nursing vacancies the hospital will not survive. The HSE have launched an expensive campaign against elderly abuse and yet are engaging in abusing the elderly by shutting down local hospital and vital services.”

Family members spoke movingly of how the closure of the ward and the displacement of their loved ones to other areas of the hospital would have a traumatic effect on the patients.

Councillor Joan Collins called on everyone to support the campaign to keep all beds open as had been achieved in the past by the families and the people of Ballyfermot. “There is a mechanism for management to have the recruitment embargo lifted to employ extra nurses if they had the political will to do so. It is up to people power to force them to show respect for the elderly”.

Also speaking where Gino Kenny, PBPA councillor for North Clondalkin and local Eirigi councillor Luise Mineghan.

The campaign will be having another protest outside Cherry Orchard Hospital on Tuesday 13th of July between 10-1 and Thursday 15th of July between 10-1pm. Please come and show your support

A large community protest is expected tomorrow in Ballyfermot to protest at the closure of services in Cherry Orchard Hospital. One ward, the Laurel Unit is to close permanently with the loss of 18 beds due to a shortage of nursing staff at the hospital.

Following a meeting with local politicans, hospital management indicated that there is a crisis in staffing levels and they will close down 18 beds initially. In the long term they cannot guarantee the delivery of vital services for elderly patients in the West Dublin Community.

Local people are very angry that the HSE embargo on recruitment will not be lifted to ensure that these services for patients suffering from altheimzers and dementia are fully delivered.

The march will take place at 3pm from the Kylemore Roundabout and will proceed to the hospital where hundreds of signed petitions will be handed to management. There is full support for this protest from all local politicans, except for the Fianna Fail TD’s who have made no statement or given any response to the campaign.

This protest will be followed with further action if the HSE do not guarantee that all beds will remain open in the hospital and guarantee the continuation of all services in Cherry Orchard.

NO TO DUBLIN BUS CUTS

6 05 2010

Hi everyone. We held a Public meeting last Tuesday in Ballyfermot , where ex-bus worker Eugene MacDonagh expalined about the cutbacks which are to happen in Dublin Bus over the next few weeks/ months.

Another 90 buses are to come off the roads this year, adding to the 120 taken off the roads last year. For every bus that comes off the road, 90 cars go on! That means by the end of this year 18,900 cars will have been added to our city’s roads!

Enough is Enough we must PROTECT our Public services! Watch this space we will be building a campaign around this issue!

PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT OPPOSES FURTHER CUTS TO DUBLIN BUS

26 04 2010

People Before Profit candidate for Mayor, Councillor Brid Smith condemns Dublin Bus’ decision to cut a 150 jobs and attack bus services by taking a further 90 buses off the road. These cuts, on top of the 120 buses that were cut from the fleet last year, will mean that Dublin Bus is operating at levels close to the 1980s. There are now just 970 buses on the road compared to 960 buses operating in 1989.

Brid Smith said:

“This is only the start of the attacks on jobs and services in Dublin Bus. While management claims these cuts will result in a more efficient service, the reality is that these cuts can only lead to poorer service and traffic chaos. Last year when they cut the buses they reduced the running time to squeeze in extra journeys, putting drivers under pressure to make the faster travel times. Drivers had to drop journeys, which were simply adjusted away by controllers.

“These cuts are just the most recent in a long series of attacks on services and jobs in Dublin Bus. The real agenda of the company is to privatise this essential public service and allow private companies to cherry pick the most profitable routes and do away with concept of the social responsibility to provide and protect public transport.

“Just like last year it will be working class areas that will suffer the most as those who depend most on these services will once find that the axe will fall heaviest on their communities.

“The worse thing about these cuts is that they make absolutely no sense. Given the high levels of unemployment in Dublin it is ridiculous to impose these massive job cuts, voluntary or otherwise, on workers who operate such a valuable public service.

“According to the Oireachtas transport committee, we’re supposed to have a target of 80 per cent of Dublin commuters travelling by bus by the end of this year. But how can these targets ever be anything other than a joke when we have one of the lowest public subsidies for bus services in the EU?

Labour councillors fail to support council workers work-to-rule

19 03 2010

Yesterday at the Finance SPC in Dublin City Council the issue of the work-to-rule by council workers was raised in a discussion with the personnel manager.

IMPACT trade union have notified the council that their members will not work with any TD or Councillor from today as an escalation of the work-to-rule.

Cllr Paddy Bourke complained that “the unions are going a step too far” and that the staff are going “the extra mile”. Paddy and his fellow Labour Councillors Dermot Lacey and Kevin Humphries all opposed this escalation as it hurts the public since they are representing the public and those that elected them by dealing with queries to the Council.

Never let it be said that all three have been trade unionists all their lives but this is a step too far by the unions. One of them proposed we meet the unions to put the case to them.

PBP councillor Brid Smith reminded all councillors that it is less than two months when we democratically passed a motion at the council monthly meeting by a significant majority which indicated support for the work-to-rule and acknowledged that any inconvenience resulting from the workers’ action would be the fault of the Fianna Fail/Green Party government and not of the workers or their unions. So any complaints about this escalation must be directed at the Government and not at the workers or their trade unions. It would be a major contribution to the battle for a “Fairer Way” if Dublin City Councillors would look for a meeting with Minister John Gormley and lay the blame squarely at the door where it belongs.

Councillor Brid Smith welcomes to decision to keep Cedar House open

19 03 2010

In a recent statement Cllr Brid Smith of the People Before Profit Alliance welcomed the decision to keep Cedar House Homeless Unit open.

Following a motion passed at the March meeting of Dublin City Council it has been agreed that Cedar House Homeless Unit will not be closing until there is solid proof that replacement services are in place.

The motion proposed by Cllr Smith said “This Council condemns the proposed closure of Cedar House Homeless Hostel in accordance with the strategy of the Homeless Agency, “Pathway to Home”. We demand that this unit remains fully open and continues the provision of services to homeless people in our city until such time as alternative and adequate housing alternatives are put in place. An essential 20 bed dormitory is due for closure by 30th March 2010 and no adequate alternative has yet been identified and communicated. 30 individual rooms and all other services are due for cessation by 30th September 2010.”

Cedar House provides services for up to 50 men per night and up to 50 men and women per day. Services provided include: emergency accommodation, counselling, methadone maintenance programmes, personal development programmes, educational programmes, doctor/nurse access, life skills programmes, key workers, day drop in centre providing shower facilities, clean clothing, bedding and food.

Cllr Brid Smith said: “I welcome this decision. This is a great victory fro the staff of Cedar House who fought a determined campaign to keep the service open. This is another example of people power bringing results.

Its also a great victory for the many homeless people who use the service. With growing waiting lists for houses there is a vital need to keep services like Cedar House open. It is also vital that we put the resources into solving the homeless crisis. With many vacant properties throughout the City there should be no need for people to be on the streets”.

Cllr Smith will be the People Before Profit Alliance candidate in the Mayoral election which will take place later in the year. Housing and homelessness will be one of her priorities on the campaign.

Dublin City Council votes to Save Homeless Service

4 03 2010

Motion from People Before Profit Councillor Brid Smith Passed By City Council

Last night Dublin City Council voted overwhelmingly to save Cedar House
Homeless Unit. The Council is now seeking that the Homeless Agency reverses  its decision to close the unit.

Cedar House provides services for up to 50 men per night and up to 50 men
and women per day.  Services provided include: emergency accommodation, counselling, methadone  maintenance programmes, personal development programmes, educational  programmes, doctor/nurse access, life skills programmes, key workers, day  drop in centre providing shower facilities, clean clothing, bedding and  food.

The motion said:

“This Council condemns the proposed closure of Cedar House Homeless Hostel  in accordance with the strategy of the Homeless Agency, “Pathway to Home”.

In proposing the motion People Before Profit Councillor Brid Smith said:

“If the decision makers go ahead with planned closures of these facilities
without ensuring continued and consistent access to support services many
people will regress dramatically in their struggle to improve their lives.

The Pathway to Home strategy can only work if there is an adequate supply of  long-term housing. With 60,000 people currently on the waiting list there is  clearly a shortfall . Without a guarantee of appropriate long term  accommodation it is impossible for us to accept this closure”.
The motion was taken under Lord Mayors Business and was passed
overwhelmingly. Councillor Smith is now calling on the Mayor to ensure that  Council officials convey the clear view of the Council to the Homeless
Agency.

People Before Profit is fully committed to supporting the staff in their
campaign to keep Cedar House open.

ELECTION OF DUBLIN MAYOR

1 03 2010

Councillor Brid Smith of the People Before Profit Alliance will contest the election for a Dublin Mayor. It is likely this election will take place in the Autumn and will give the newly elected Mayor “substantial powers to deliver a vision for Dublin”.

The People Before Profit Alliance believes this election provides an opportunity to the people of Dublin to show their opposition to the current policies of our Government which are leading to chronic unemployment in the city, growing numbers of families on the housing list, the implementation of water charges and cut backs in local services.

Brid Smith will campaign against water charges and incineration for the Dublin Region. Instead she will advocate the creation of a public works scheme with directly employed labour to

- upgrade all water infrastructure to prevent massive waste of water through leakage

- a city-wide home insulation programme to conserve energy and protect all water piping from erosion and leakages

- installation of water conservation methods such as dual-flush toilets and grey water bins

- increased re-cycling of waste to prevent land-fill usage and the introduction of mechanical biological treatment plants to prevent incineration

- maintain and restore all the public housing stock to ensure no houses are left empty in our estates and families are taken off the housing waiting lists.

People Before Profit are opposed to incineration as a means of dealing with waste management and Brid will call for ending  the contract with Covanta and Dong for the Poolbeg incinerator.

Billions of taxpayers money has been used to bail out the banks while thousands of young people have had their homes re-possessed by the banks. Brid will demand that empty developments are taken in public ownership instead of the compulsory leasing system that local authorities are subject to, giving a further bail out to the developers.

Job creation must be a priority for our capital city and Brid will be promoting the engagement of direct labour by the local authorities to build, maintain and repair public facilities such as libraries, swimming pools, youth and family resource centres, playgrounds and crèches.

Brid Smith will actively seek the support of local community activists and trade unionists for this campaign to transform Dublin into a vibrant city that is focussed on its people and services that are publicly provided.

People Before Profit Councillors Condemn Council Decision To Sack Water and Flood Engineers

2 12 2009

In a statement tonight People Before Profit Councillor Joan Collins condemned the decision of Dublin City Council to sack six engineers whose responsibilities include water and flood defence.

With the backing of Councillor Brid Smyth a motion has been tabled for the next meeting of the Council calling for the decision to be reversed.

The motion states “This Council condemns the recent decision of management to terminate the contracts of six graduate engineers by the Council in the areas of drainage, environment, water, flood defence and roads. Given the recent catastrophic consequences of flooding across the country, this decision is totally inappropriate and compromises the ability of this Council to cope with similar threats of flooding of Dublin City. We call for the immediate re-instatement of these professional workers who will contribute to the prevention of a flooding disaster in Dublin. Any short term costs saved by the termination of these contracts pales significantly in the face of what it could end up costing the city in both in human and financial terms.”

The engineers are to have their contracts terminated tomorrow. Councillor Collins is calling on the City Manager to put a stay on the decision until the Council has an opportunity to discuss the matter.

The People Before Profit Alliance Councillors have pledged to provide full backing to the engineers and their union, SIPTU, in fighting these unjust and unnecessary sackings.

Great News

12 11 2009

On the 4th of November the workers who were being denied recognition of their service by Glassco were informed by the management of the new contractors that their right to recongition of service and the full implementation of the Transfer of Undertakings has been granted.
It’s great to win something especially for the workers concerned.

YES vote will have grave consequences for Ireland and Europe

8 10 2009
Time for limits on corporate spending

The People Before Profit Alliance today said that the outcome of Lisbon 2 is decisive

Councillor Richard Boyd Barrett said “The people have voted and we accept the outcome. We have had neither an honest or democratic debate on the treaty and its grave consequences for the people of Europe and Ireland. We saw an unprecedented mobilisation of resources on the Yes side with corporate heavyweights ploughing hundreds of thousands into their campaign. Its now time for limits to be placed on corporate involvement in referenda.

We saw an absolute refusal by the YES side to debate the details of the Treaty. But worst of all the YES side scared the people into believing that their jobs and the economy were doomed if they voted NO. We have seen unprecedented levels of political irresponsibility. It is shocking that the Labour Party joined this heavy gang of scaremongers given so much is at stake for the people they claim to represent.

We do not believe that this treaty will help solve the economic crisis. Indeed it will make it worse. The policies enshrined in the treaty are the policies that caused the recession.”

Councillor Joan Collins said “This Treaty will have grave consequences across Europe for public services and workers rights. It will lead to the further militarisation of the EU. We will be working with other progressive forces to oppose the implementation of these policies.

We will continue our campaign for a new direction in Europe: a Europe which focuses on eliminating poverty, which prioritises spending on health and education over military spending, which gives primacy to job creation and the rights of workers.”

Lisbon Treaty Can Be Defeated

29 09 2009

pbp-lisbon-poster1

Lisbon offers more of the same failed economic policies

Lisbon Treaty offers more pain for ordinary people
New direction needed for Europe

Today during a street meeting and canvass on Grafton Street, Dublin, The People Before Profit Alliance called on its supporters for one last heave against the Treaty.

Councillor Richard Boyd Barrett said
“We can still defeat this treaty. Across the country it is very clear that the working people, the unemployed and the poor are against this treaty. Our job now is to get the vote out.

“Where there has been a real debate on the treaty people are against it. The Yes said have failed to seriously engage in a debate on the content of the treaty.

“People know there are no jobs in this treaty. This treaty offers us the same failed economic policies which have caused the recession.

“Undistorted competition and profit maximisation are at the core of the EU. “The European Central Bank (ECB) is supporting NAMA and, in a document published in February, has warned against the perils of nationalisation. The ECB is concerned about “the risk of banks’ objectives being diverted from profit maximisation to alternative goals”. Is this focus on profit maximisation not the source of our current problems? Surely we need a new model of banking were the need for investment in social infrastructure takes precedence over the greed of bankers.”

Councillor Joan Collins said that the treaty would inflict real pain on the public
“The EU fully supports the government policy of making ordinary people pay for the recession through a programme of savage cuts in services and wages. It is quite clear that the wide range of cuts proposed in the Mc Carthy report are aimed at meeting the limits on government spending set out in the EU Stability and Growth Pact. The Lisbon Treaty gives new powers to the EU Commission to ensure that governments do not breach these limits. This will mean real pain for the people I represent. The treaty calls for increases in military spending but not for health or education ”

Councillor Brid Smith
said that public services and workers rights are under threat
“There can be no doubt that the Lisbon Treaty is a weapon in the hand of those who wish to open the provision of health and education services to private companies. The EU Commission is a strong advocate of liberalisation and the treaty gives it the tools to privatise essential services.

“The treaty copperfastens judgements of the European Court of Justice which place the rights of business above the rights of workers. Calling on workers to vote for this treaty is like asking turkies to vote for Christmas.
“The People Before Profit Alliance is arguing for a new direction in Europe. A Europe that puts spending on jobs, education and health before arms spending. A Europe that guarantees workers rights over the rights of big business. Only by voting NO can we open up a debate which can lead to a real change for the future in Europe.”
